Technical Round Table Event – Energy Efficiency and Cannabis Cultivation Facilities

Cannabis cultivation in Massachusetts is projected to be a $700-million - $1.38 billion business by 2020, with hundreds of facilities seeking state licensure. These facilities have very intensive energy use requirements – cannabis facility energy use is similar to data centers, at nearly 200w/sf making up 20% of operating costs. In 2015, Bloomberg estimated that cannabis cultivation facilities made up almost 45% of the new power demand in Colorado.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission oversees a newly-created working group of state agencies to help develop best practices regarding energy efficiency and water usage. This working group and the new industry it serves will need the expertise of the energy engineering community.

Join us for a full day event as we explore a number of topics in depth about these fascinating facilities:

  • Benchmarking and energy intensity of cannabis cultivation facilities
  • Biological requirements of the plant during various life cycle periods, overall requirements for successful growth
  • HVAC requirements, best practices, equipment, facility management, energy management
  • Lighting options and requirements
  • Water use and re-use for cannabis facilities
  • Energy supply options, contractual issues
  • Policy development and code issues

This all-day event is scheduled for December 6, 2018 and will be held at the UMASS Lowell Inn and Conference Center, 50 Warren Street, Lowell, MA 01852.  Registration begins at 7:30 AM.  Continental breakfast and lunch will be served. Two networking breaks are scheduled.
